Volume of sea transport decreased by 26 per cent in March 2024

According to Statistics Finland’s preliminary data, the total volume of foreign sea transport was 6.1 million tonnes in March 2024. Sea transport decreased by 26 per cent compared to March 2023. Exports decreased by 42 per cent and amounted to 2.5 million tonnes. Imports decreased by 9 per cent and totalled 3.7 million tonnes. A total of 0.9 million persons were transported in passenger traffic.

General cargo transported most in foreign shipping traffic in March

A total of 1.1 million tonnes of general cargo were transported. Oil products, 1.1 million tonnes, and crude oil, 1.0 million tonnes, were transported second most.

The most import-dominated types of goods were crude oil, crude minerals and cement as well as ores and consentrates. The most export-dominated types of goods were sawn wood, fertilizers as well as wood pulp.

Measured by the volume of goods transported, the largest ports in March 2024 were, in order, Sköldvik, Helsinki, HaminaKotka, Raahe and Naantali.

In March 2024, there were 65 per cent fewer containers transported than one year before. Measured in tonnes, the volume of transport by trailers went down by 57 per cent, while the volume of transport by trucks went up by 14 per cent.

Most sea transport between Finland and Sweden in March

Combining imports and exports, most sea transport took place between Finland and Sweden in March, totalling 1.2 million tonnes. Most goods were imported from Norway, 1.0 million tonnes and most were exported to The Netherlands, 0.4 million tonnes.

A total of 0.9 million persons were transported in passenger traffic

A total of 0.9 million persons were transported in passenger traffic in March 2024. In all, 523,682 persons travelled between Finland and Estonia, 377,400 between Finland and Sweden, and 16,010 between Finland and Germany. Compared with March 2023, the number of passengers increased by 12 per cent.

In March 2024, no passengers of foreign cruise ships arrived in Finland.
