Description of the data collection
The business services inquiry collects information on the production of business services. Enterprises are asked about their turnover by service product category according to the CPA product classification, the breakdown of turnover between private and public sector customers, and the breakdown of turnover by residence of client, divided into domestic, foreign within the EU area, and foreign outside the EU area.
The data collection is based on Regulation (EC) No 295/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council concerning structural business statistics, Annex VIII.
The data are requested from the enterprises yearly in April to May.
From whom are data collected?
The data for the statistics are collected on computer and information services, advertising services, services provided by employment placement agencies, legal services, accounting, bookkeeping and auditing services, management consulting services, architectural and engineering services, technical testing and analysis services, and market research services.
Depending on the industry, the data are collected from enterprises employing at least five or 20 persons, because in many service industries the limit of 20 employees does not cover enough of the industry's turnover. The data collection covers the largest enterprises by industry and when the number of enterprises permits, also a sample of smaller enterprises. The data collection annually targets about 1,300 enterprises.
Enterprises' obligation to provide the data is based on the Statistics Act (280/2004).
The Statistics Act (280/2004) obliges Statistics Finland to treat the data as confidential and use them only for statistical and research purposes.
What are the data used for?
The collected data are, in addition to the business services statistics, utilised in the compilation of the Producer Price Index for Services and in the national accounts. The data of these statistics are also delivered to the Statistical Office of the European Communities, Eurostat.
Previously, the data on legal services, accounting, bookkeeping and auditing services, management consulting services, architectural and engineering services, technical testing and analysis services, and market research services were collected every other year. From 2012 onwards, the data for these industries are collected annually.
