Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Participation in the inquiry
Is our enterprise obliged to provide data?
Yes, if your enterprise is included in the sample of data suppliers and your enterprise has imports, exports or manufacturing in a CPA product category defined in the price inquiry form, or if your enterprise offers such services or service products that belong to the service groups included in the index.
Enterprises' obligation to provide data is based on the Statistics Act (280/2004).
Our establishment no longer has any operations. Do we still have to respond to the inquiry?
No. When business operations end, we ask you to contact the producer price indices team so that we can remove the establishment of your enterprise from the data collection.
Why is our enterprise included in the inquiry?
As a producer, importer, exporter or provider of one or more important product groups belonging to the index, your enterprise has been selected into the sample or enterprises, which report price data for the index.
The statistics on producer price indices for manufactured products cover enterprises that have manufacturing, imports or exports within the main categories A to F of the CPA 2008 product classification. The sample contains enterprises that have had manufacturing, imports or exports during the time period for which the data supplier sample has been made. The data suppliers have been selected from the Business Register, commodity statistics of manufacturing, and the foreign trade statistics of Finnish Customs using a stratified random sample. The data supplier sample for the producer price indices is updated continuously.
The sampling frame of the producer price indices for manufactured products is based on Statistics Finland’s Business Register and business services statistics. Depending on the service industry, data suppliers have been selected either by applying PPS (Probability Proportional to Size) sampling or judicious sampling, or by combining judicious and probability-based sampling.
How are data collected?
We collect data with web and email questionnaires. In addition, we can ask for supplementary data by telephone.
How will my enterprise be contacted?
The Producer Price Indices team sends a notification to the data suppliers informing that the data collection is starting. We are also in contact with data suppliers by telephone where needed.
Which data are collected?
We collect data on products and services and on their prices. The data on producer prices for manufactured products can be either import, export or domestic market prices. For producer price indices for services, data are also collected from time to time about enterprises' turnover and distribution of turnover between different service groups.
How often do you collect data?
Data on producer prices for manufactured products are collected monthly, on producer prices for services quarterly.
How will our enterprise benefit from answering the inquiry?
Participation of your enterprise is important in order for Statistics Finland to be able to produce reliable statistics that give an accurate picture of the state of the economy.
By participating you also ensure that the financial decisions related to your enterprise are based on reliable statistical data. Producer price indices are published by industry so your enterprise can compare the price development of purchases and sales in relation to the average price development of the industries you are interested in.
When can we respond to the data collection?
The data collection of the producer prices of manufactured products for each collection month is opened towards the end of the month in question. The data collection of the producer prices for services for each collection quarter always starts close to the beginning of the quarter. When the data collection is opened, Statistics Finland sends the data suppliers a notification by email.
When should we answer the price inquiry at the latest?
You should respond to the price inquiry within one week of receiving the notification or as soon as the data are available.
Why do you need data on a product with a small market and whose price rarely changes?
It is possible that a product that is included in the inquiry has a small importance from the enterprise's viewpoint. The product may have a small market and its price rarely changes. The product in question may, however, be important from the viewpoint of the producer price indices. The sample of the data collection must include an extensive amount of products in a particular CPA class. This means that products with a smaller market value also are important in the data collection.
Where do I find the product and industry classifications?
- Classification of Products by Activity CPA 2008
- Standard Industrial Classification 2008
- CN classification
In the product data it is asked in which country the product originates. We import the products from a different country than where they were originally manufactured. Which country should we enter here?
You enter the country from which you import, that is buy, the product.
You ask for the domestic market price of the product. Can we enter our list price for which we sell the product to consumers?
No, you cannot. You need to enter the producer price of the product.
Here, domestic market price refers to the price of a product manufactured in Finland or an import product when it first enters the markets. So here you need to enter the so-called factory price exclusive of taxes (domestic product) or the c.i.f. price of imported products.
I have lost my user ID and password, what should I do?
Please contact the producer price index team in order to get a new user ID and password.
I am the new contact person for the enterprise. How can I acquire a user ID, password and other data needed for answering?
Please contact the producer price index team in order to get a user ID, password and other data.
Can we report prices including value added tax?
No, you cannot. The prices must be reported exclusive of value added tax. If you are asked for the market price including excise duty, include all possible excise and environmental protection taxes but not value added tax.
Do we include the taxes collected by the Customs in the prices?
No, report prices excluding customs taxes.
How are our data processed?
Based on the Statistics Act (2008/2004), the collected data must be kept confidential and they are treated as strictly confidential. In published statistics, data are reported at a level from which the price development of an individual enterprise cannot be identified.
Where can I find the latest point figures?
The latest point figures are found on the home page of the producer price indices and on the home page of the producer price indices for services.
