The number of enterprise openings increased by one per cent and the number of enterprise closures decreased by three per cent when compared with 2015

According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings in 2016 were most numerous in professional, scientific and technical activities and the number of enterprise closures were most numerous in trade. Regionally enterprise openings and closures were most numerous in Uusimaa. The number of enterprise openings increased by 0.8 per cent from 2015. The number of enterprise closures decreased by 0.7 per cent from 2017.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 28,533 enterprise openings in 2016. Enterprise openings accounted for 7.6 per cent of the total stock of enterprises. The number of enterprise openings was highest in professional, scientific and technical activities, where it totalled 4,602, or 16.1 per cent of all enterprise openings in 2016.

There were 25,870 enterprise closures in 2016. Enterprise closures accounted for 6.6 per cent of the total stock of enterprises. The number of enterprise closures was highest in trade, where it totaled 4,693, or 18.9 per cent of all enterprise closures in 2016.

Examined by region, the highest numbers of both enterprise openings (10, 943) and closures (8, 971) were recorded in Uusimaa in 2016. Compared to 2015, the number of enterprise openings increased most in Uusimaa (262) and decreased most in Ostrobothnia (-92). The number of enterprise closures increased most in Uusimaa (66) and Satakunta (66) and decreased most in Pirkanmaa (-181).

Examined by sub-regional unit, the highest numbers of both enterprise openings and closures in 2016 were recorded in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (10,272 and 8,418, respectively). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (9.1%) and that of closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Koillis-Savo (9.5%).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of both enterprise openings (5,619) and closures (4,568) were recorded in Helsinki in 2016. Compared to 2015, the number of enterprise openings increased most in Helsinki (125) and decreased most in Vihti (-47). The number of enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (108) and decreased most in Tampere (-87).

Examined by legal form, during 2016 enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 13, 577 and those of the form of limited company 12, 558. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 13,289 and those of the form of limited company 8,303.

These numbers include changes in enterprises resulting from incorporations and mergers, for example.

Enterprise openings and closures are deduced from the Tax Administration’s customer database. Therefore, changes in Tax Administration’s information systems or database management practices may affect the statistics and the comparability of the time series.
