Cubic volume covered by granted building permits smaller in June to August than one year earlier

According to Statistics Finland, in June to August 2016, building permits were granted for a total of 8.7 million cubic metres. This was approximately one fifth lower than in the corresponding period of the year before. Measured by volume, 3 per cent more building permits were granted for residential buildings than one year earlier. In all other types of buildings the cubic volume remained lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. For 2016, the cubic volume granted stayed lower than usual during the busiest summer holiday months.

Growth in residential building construction slowed down

The cubic volume of building permits granted for residential buildings was 3.1 million in June to August. Building permits granted for building blocks of flats kept the entire residential building construction slightly growing.

Building permits were granted for building a total of 10,180 dwellings, which is 15.5 per cent more than one year earlier.

The share of residential building construction covered good one-third of the cubic volume granted for the entire construction in June to August.

Ongoing building production grows further

In June to August, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production increased by 16.7 per cent year-on-year. The volume of construction of residential buildings increased in the period by 18.1 per cent and that of other than residential building construction by 15.6 per cent. Measured by volume, at the same time, 10 per cent more building projects and 11.1 per cent more residential building projects were started than one year earlier.

The published data are based on the building permit data of the Population Register Centre. The register data are supplemented as municipal building supervisors provide data to the Population Information System and the now published data can become revised. Due to the reviews of the Population Information System, the accrued data from one year back do not fully correspond to those of the present data and cause bias to the calculation of change percentages. The data still has undercoverage for the newest months and will be supplemented over coming months.
