Cubic volume covered by granted building permits decreased in December to February year-on-year

According to Statistics Finland, 7.4 per cent fewer building permits were granted in the December to February period than in the corresponding period of the year before. Other than residential building decreased by 21.6 per cent, which was mostly affected by the low volume of building permits granted for industrial and warehouse buildings. However, growth in residential building construction was still strong but the 30.4 per cent growth was not enough to turn total construction positive.

Strong growth in residential building construction

In December to February, 2.8 million building permits were granted for residential building construction. The cubic volume of residential blocks of flats grew by over 50 per cent in December to February, which is explained by the relatively low cubic volume one year ago.

In December to February, building permits were granted for a total of 9,887 dwellings, growing by 31.4 per cent from the corresponding period of last year.

Volume of building production grew year-on-year

In December to February, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production increased by 6.9 per cent year-on-year. The volume of residential building construction increased in the period by 12.3 per cent and that of other than residential building construction by 2.3 per cent. Measured by volume, at the same time, 13.3 per cent more building projects and 30.9 per cent more residential building projects were started than one year earlier.
