Road traffic accidents claimed 28 lives in December

According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 494 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in December. In them, 28 persons were killed and 611 persons injured. The number of persons killed was the same as in December 2007 and that of persons injured 70 lower.

Of the persons who were killed, 19 travelled by passenger car. Pedestrians killed in road traffic accidents numbered 7 and cyclists 1. In addition, 1 other road user was killed. Among those who died, 18 were men and 10 were women.

A total of 6 845 road traffic accidents involving personal injury happened in the January to December period. In them, 343 persons were killed and 8 474 persons injured. The number of persons killed was 34 lower and that of persons injured 63 higher than in the corresponding period of 2007. Of the persons who were killed, 206 travelled by passenger car, 8 by van, 5 by lorry, 33 by motorcycle and 11 by moped. Pedestrians killed numbered 52 and cyclists 17. In addition, 11 other road users were killed.
