The Classification of Sectors 2012 will be introduced in the Labour Force Survey

The Labour Force Survey will adopt the Classification of Sectors 2012 starting from the statistical reference year 2020, where applicable. Statistics Finland has made the decision (ref. TK-41-444-19) to adopt the Classification of Sectors 2012 in the Population and Social Statistics Department. The aim is to standardise the classifications used and the quality in statistics production, as well as improve the comparability of statistics.

The Classification of Sectors 2012 is a basic classification applied to economic and social statistics for the classification of the activities, financing modes, owner types and legal forms of decision-making units into equivalent categories. The Classification of Sectors 2012 is based on the European System of Accounts of the European Union. The sectors (non-financial corporations, general government, households, etc.) formed with the help of the classification are sufficiently similar in their economic behaviour for national economic monitoring and analysis.

The Economic and Environmental Statistics Department is responsible for the content of Classification of Sectors at Statistics Finland and the Business Register that belongs to the Data Collection Department is responsible for practical implementation.

The Classification of Sectors 2012 will replace the current national application of the classification of sectors used in the Labour Force Survey. Based on the employer sector classification used in the Labour Force Survey employed persons will also in future be divided into the public and private sector according to the employer. More information about how the classification change affects the data of the Labour Force Survey will be published on 25 February 2020 in connection with the release of January data of the Labour Force Survey.
