Environment Statistics 2004 -publication

Environment Statistics 2004 examines interaction between man and nature from several perspectives. The covered topics include emissions to air, burdening of waters, waste, land use, total material requirement, energy, transport, environmental taxation and environmental protection expenditure. The publication also contains information on the attitudes of EU citizens to environmental matters.

The Chapter Air Emissions describes the development of emissions of greenhouse gases and other significant air emissions in Finland. The data on greenhouse gas emissions derive from the emission inventories submitted annually to the UN's Convention of Climate Change. The inventories are used to monitor progress under the Kyoto Protocol.

The Chapter Land Use presents data by region in accordance with the Finnish Land Use Classification that was introduced in the year 2000.

The Chapter Total Material Requirement of Finland gives an overview of how the volumes of material that impose loading on the environment have changed, and of the development of the material dependency of the national economy relative to the gross domestic product and number of population.

Apart from the Chapter mentioned above, the Chapters Production and Consumption, Environmental Taxation and Environmental Protection Expenditure also put a major emphasis on the perspective of environmental economy.

The information in Environment Statistics 2004 is based on data collected by research institutes, administrative bodies, Statistics Finland, Eurostat and OECD. On several topics the publication contains abundant comparative data from other industrialised countries, the latest relating to 2003.
