Nordic Statistical Meeting forerunner in the statistical field – offsets participants’ flight emissions

The Nordic Statistical Meeting organised by Statistics Finland on 26 to 28 August 2019 is the first Nordic Statistical Meeting to offset foreign participants’ air and sea travel emissions.

”We wanted to take environmental aspects into account in the meeting arrangements, just as Finland does in all other meetings during the Council Presidency”, says Statistics Finland's Director General Marjo Bruun. Finland will offset emissions from air travel during the Presidency of the Council of the EU by funding projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and simultaneously advance sustainable development goals.

“The programme is planned in such a way, that the participants can attend the meeting, the satellite conference and course on their own area of expertise during the same trip – this in part reduces the need for air travel”, says Faiz Alsuhail, Head of the Programme Committee.

The main theme for the Nordic Statistical Meeting (NSM 2019) is Facts for Future. The conference discusses artificial intelligence, machine learning, digitalisation, statistical literacy and many current issues in the field of statistics. The meeting culminates on Wednesday in President Tarja Halonen’s presentation Measuring sustainable development.
