The Candidates

A total of 2083 candidates were set up for election, of which 1268 were men and 815 women. Of the members of the recent parliament two thirds were renominated. In comparison to the election of 1991 the number of male candidates increased by 145 and the number of women increased by 27. Eighteen parties took part in the election. Of the candidates more than half (54%) were entered by the five largest parties.

The greater part, 61 %, of the candidates was composed of men. The proportion of women candidates decreased in these elections for the first time, after a positive development that had gone on for 30 years. Especially the four largest parties (SDP, KESK, KOK, VAS) had been constantly increasing the share of women candidates. In this election only the Social Democratic Party, of the above mentioned parties, increased its proportion of women candidates. Also within the Green League, which has only taken part as a party in two previous elections, the propotion of women candidates has been large and in this election over half of the candidates were women.
