Road traffic accidents claimed 31 lives in May

According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 619 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in May. In them, 31 persons were killed and 793 persons injured. The number of persons killed was 6 higher and that of persons injured 7 higher than in May 2008.

Of the persons who were killed, 21 travelled by passenger car, 4 by motorcycle, 1 by van and 1 by moped. Pedestrians killed in road traffic accidents numbered 1 and cyclists 2. In addition, 1 other road user was killed. Among those who died, 26 were men and 5 were women.

A total of 2 085 road traffic accidents involving personal injury happened in the January to May period. In them, 105 persons were killed and 2 703 persons injured. The number of persons killed was 12 lower and that of persons injured 193 lower than in the corresponding period of 2008. Of the person who were killed, 67 travelled by passenger car, 9 by motorcycle, 5 by lorry, 5 by van and 2 by moped. Pedestrians killed numbered 10 and cyclists 4. In addition, 3 other road users were killed.
