Description of the data collection

The inquiry on new orders in manufacturing collects the value of new orders received during the month for those commodities and services that are meant to be produced by establishments located in Finland.

From whom are data collected?

The statistics on new orders in manufacturing are based on a judicious sample. The basic observation unit is an enterprise or a kind-of-activity unit operating in the manufacturing industry, for which the monthly sample is around 420. Measured by turnover, the coverage of the sample is around 80 per cent.

The sample is reviewed annually and the most significant new enterprises or kind-of-activity units are added to it. The aim of the formation of the sample is to attain a sufficient industrial coverage with respect to turnover with an optimally small sample size.

Enterprises' obligation to provide data is based on the Finnish Statistics Act (280/2004).

What are the data used for?

The index calculated based on the data collected in the inquiry on new orders in manufacturing gives new information about the development of new orders and future development of output and turnover. Public administration, business life and research institutes can use the data to evaluate the progress of the economy.

The Statistics Act obliges Statistics Finland to treat the data as confidential and use them only for statistical purposes.
