Description of the data collection

The aim of the inventory inquiry is to establish the value of inventories of enterprises operating in the industries of trade and manufacturing by type of goods at the end of each quarter. The used types of goods are materials and supplies, work in progress, finished goods and goods for resale.

The statistics on manufacturing and trade inventories are part of the Official Statistics of Finland (OSF).

From whom are data collected?

The inquiry includes around 270 enterprises in the industry of trade and 420 in manufacturing. The sample was formed by selecting to it some of the most significant enterprises in their respective industries measured by turnover. The sample is updated annually.

Enterprises' obligation to provide data is based on the Finnish Statistics Act (280/2004, Section 14).

What are the data used for?

The data of inquiry on manufacturing and trade inventories describe the development of the value of manufacturing and trade inventories and their levels at the end of quarters. The data of the statistics are used for compiling the change in inventories component for quarterly national accounts.

Data processing

The Statistics Act obliges Statistics Finland to treat the data as confidential and use them only for statistical purposes.


The compilation of the statistics on manufacturing and trade inventories as a separate set of statistics will be discontinued after the publication of the data for the fourth quarter of 2021 on 18 February 2022.
