Unemployment rate 7.0 per cent in July

According to Statistics Finland’s Labour Force Survey, the number of unemployed persons in July 2014 was 193,000, which was 11,000 higher than one year ago. The unemployment rate was 7.0 per cent, having been 6.6 per cent in July of the year before. There were 17,000 fewer employed persons than in July of the previous year. The number of persons in the inactive population was 15,000 higher than one year earlier.

In July 2014, the number of employed persons was 2,550,000 (margin of error ±31,000), which was 17,000 fewer than a year earlier. There were 26,000 fewer employed men and 9,000 more employed women than in July 2013. The number of employed persons fell in the private sector but grew in the public sector. The number of employees went down but that of self-employed persons and unpaid family workers grew compared with July 2013.

In July 2014, the employment rate , that is, the proportion of the employed among persons aged 15 to 64, stood at 71.2 per cent, having been 71.7 per cent one year earlier. Men’s employment rate was 72.1 per cent and women’s 70.3 per cent. Adjusted for seasonal and random variation, the trend of the employment rate was 68.2 per cent.

According to Statistics Finland's Labour Force Survey, there were 193,000 unemployed (margin of error ±17,000) in July 2014, i.e. 11,000 more than one year earlier. The number of unemployed men was 106,000 and that of women 87,000.

The unemployment rate in July 2014 was 7.0 per cent and one year earlier it was 6.6 per cent. Men’s unemployment rate was 7.5 per cent and women’s 6.6 per cent. The trend of the unemployment rate was 8.3 per cent.

In July, there were a total of 652,000 young people aged 15 to 24 . Of them, 339,000 were employed and 46,000 unemployed. Thus, the labour force of young people (employed and unemployed) totalled 385,000. The share of unemployed people aged 15 to 24 among the population in the same age group was 7.1 per cent. In July, the unemployment rate for young people aged 15 to 24, that is, the proportion of the unemployed among the labour force, stood at 12.0 per cent, which was 1.9 percentage points higher than one year previously. The trend of the unemployment rate among young people was 19.8 per cent.

There were 1,352,000 persons in the inactive population in July 2014, which was 15,000 more than in July 2013. Of the inactive population, 125,000 persons were in disguised unemployment .

Employment Service Statistics of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy

At the end of July 2014, there were altogether 350,000 persons registered in accordance with the Employment Office Regulations as job seekers at the employment and economic development offices . The number of unemployed job seekers was 32,000 higher than in last year's July.

Unemployment increased from the previous year's July in the areas of all other Employment and Economic Development Centres except in North Karelia (0%); most in Uusimaa (16%) and Central Finland (12%). At the end of July, the number of temporarily laid off persons registered at the employment and economic development offices was 23,000, which was 4,000 more than twelve months earlier.

The number of persons engaged in services included in the activation stage totalled 105,000 at the end of July, which was 12,000 more than in last year's July. Altogether, 3.8 per cent of the labour force was covered by labour market policy services.

There were 52,000 unemployed job seekers aged under 25 registered at the employment and economic development offices. Their number was 5,000 higher than in July of the year before. During this July, 31,000 new vacancies were reported to the employment and economic development offices, which is 2,000 more than in July 2013.
