Sea transport increased in May 2022

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, the goods volume of foreign sea transport was in total 8.3 million tonnes in May 2022. Sea transport increased by 15 per cent from last year's May. Exports decreased by one per cent and were 4.1 million tonnes. Import volume increased by 38 per cent and were 4.2 million tonnes. Altogether 1.1 million persons were transported in passenger traffic, which was 66 per cent of the level before the corona pandemic.

General goods were transported most in foreign sea traffic in May

In May, the majority of sea transports were transports of general cargo. A total of 1.6 million tonnes of general cargo were transported. Imports of general cargo amounted to 0.8 million tonnes and exports to 0.7 million tonnes. The next most transported goods were oil products, 1.1 million tonnes, and crude oil, 0.9 million tonnes.

The most import-dominated types of goods were crude oil, coal and coke, timber and other merchandise. The most export-dominated type of goods was sawn timber, wood pulp, paper, fertilizers and plywood and veneers.

Measured by volume of goods transported, the largest ports were, in order, Sköldvik, Helsinki, Hamina-Kotka, Hanko and Kokkola. Transports at Sköldvik consisted almost entirely of oil-related products and chemicals, while transports at Helsinki and Hanko consisted mostly of general cargo. Most of the transports at Hamina-Kotka consisted of paper and other forestry products, while transports at Kokkola consisted mostly of ores and concentrates.

A total of 2.6 million tonnes, or 31 per cent of all sea transports, were transported in containers and transport units. Altogether 1.6 million tonnes of goods were transported in transport units and 1.0 million tonnes in containers.

Of the goods transported in transport units, 0.9 million tonnes were transported in lorries, 0.7 million tonnes in trailers and 0.1 million tonnes in other transport units. In addition to the transport units used for goods transport, 168,194 passengers’ cars and 2,789 buses and coaches were transported.

A total of 69,728 containers were transported, which corresponds to 122,903 TEU units.

A total of 1.1 million persons were transported in passenger traffic

A total of 1,117,600 persons were transported in passenger traffic in May 2022. In all, 548,156 passengers travelled between Finland and Estonia, 519,387 passengers between Finland and Sweden and 11,827 passengers between Finland and Germany. Compared with May 2021, the number of passengers increased nearly four-fold. Compared with May 2019 the number of passengers was, however, just 66 per cent. In May 2022, 19,264 passengers of foreign cruise ships arrived in Finland.
