According to Statistics Finland, labour costs in the private sector rose by 0.3 per cent in January to March 2023 when compared to the respective period of the year before. In the central government sector, costs grew by 2.0 per cent and in the local government sector by 0.6 per cent. The first quarter of 2023 had 64 working days, which is one more than in the corresponding period of 2022. In the labour cost index, growth in costs is usually curbed by growth in the number of working days.

  • Wellbeing services counties and joint county authorities for wellbeing services were included in the statistics starting from the beginning of 2023.
  • From the first quarter of 2023, the local government index series includes municipalities, wellbeing services counties, joint municipal authorities and joint county authorities for wellbeing services. A coherent time series is available from the beginning of 2008.
  • Among private sector industries, the biggest rise in labour costs, 4.4 per cent, was recorded in the chemical industry in January to March 2023 compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
  • Costs fell most, by 1.4 per cent, in information and communication activities and in construction in the private sector in the first quarter of 2023 from one year ago.
