One half more leisure trips abroad in spring 2023 than one year earlier

According to Statistics Finland, around 1.9 million leisure trips abroad were made in January to April 2023, which is over 50 per cent more than in the corresponding period of the year before. The number of domestic leisure trips with overnight stay remained almost on level with spring 2022, but the number of overnight stays related to the trips dropped by around one fifth.

  • The total number of leisure trips with overnight stay in Finland and abroad in spring (January to April) 2023 was 7.6 million.
  • Altogether 1.6 million leisure trips abroad with overnight stay and 14.6 million overnight stays related to the trips were recorded.
  • The number of leisure trips to Sweden and Southern Europe increased considerably compared with the corresponding period of the previous year.
  • The popularity of trips to free-time residences petered out compared to the pandemic years. In spring 2023, one-third fewer overnight stays at own free-time residences during domestic leisure trips were recorded than one year earlier.
  • The number of business trips with overnight stay both in Finland and abroad increased in spring 2023. Double the number of business trips abroad with overnight stay were recorded in the statistics compared with spring 2022.
