Volume of sea transport decreased by 5 per cent in January 2024
According to Statistics Finland’s preliminary data, the total volume of foreign sea transport was 7.0 million tonnes in January 2024. Sea transport decreased by 5 per cent compared to January 2023. Exports increased by one per cent and amounted to 3.4 million tonnes. Imports decreased by 10 per cent and totalled 3.6 million tonnes. A total of 0.6 million persons were transported in passenger traffic.

General cargo transported most in foreign shipping traffic in January
A total of 1.2 million tonnes of general cargo were transported. Oil products, 1.1 million tonnes, and crude oil, 1.0 million tonnes, were transported second most.
The most import-dominated types of goods were crude oil, coal an coke as well as timber. The most export-dominated types of goods were sawn wood, wood pulp as well as paper.
Measured by the volume of goods transported, the largest ports were, in order, Sköldvik, HaminaKotka, Helsinki, Rauma and Raahe.
Most sea transport between Finland and Germany in January
Combining imports and exports, most sea transport took place between Finland and Germany in January, totalling 1.1 million tonnes. Most goods were imported from Norway, 0.8 million tonnes and most were exported to Germany, 0.7 million tonnes.
A total of 0.6 million persons were transported in passenger traffic
A total of 0.6 million persons were transported in passenger traffic in January 2024. In all, 379,022 persons travelled between Finland and Estonia, 241,560 between Finland and Sweden, and 9,053 between Finland and Germany. Compared with January 2023, the number of passengers decreased by 13 per cent.
In January 2024, no passengers of foreign cruise ships arrived in Finland.
