Fall in producer prices strained farmers’ pay packet in the last quarter of 2023

According to Statistics Finland, the annual change in the index of producer prices of agricultural products was -6.6 per cent in the last quarter of 2023. The producer prices of plant products went down by 14.6 per cent and those of meat and animal products by 1.6 per cent. The index was most affected by a nearly 27 per cent lower price for cereals being paid to the farmer than one year earlier.

  • The producer price of fresh vegetables fell by 14.6 per cent in the last quarter of 2023 from one year ago. The main reason for this was lower producer prices of greenhouse vegetables, cucumber and tomato.
  • In the last quarter of 2023, the producer price of meat remained almost on level with both the last quarter of 2022 and the previous quarter.
  • The year-on-year change in the producer price of milk was -2.5 per cent in the last quarter of 2023. The price fell by nearly one per cent from the previous quarter.
