Altogether 18.5 million passengers flew through Finnish airports in 2023

According to Statistics Finland, altogether 18.5 million passengers flew through Finnish airports in 2023. Eighty-one per cent of the passengers were on international flights and 19 per cent on domestic flights. The total number of passengers grew by one-fifth from 2022 but was around 7.8 million lower than before the coronavirus pandemic in 2019.

The number of air traffic passengers continued to grow in 2023

Altogether 18.5 million passengers flew through Finnish airports in 2023. In all, 15.4 million passengers flew through Helsinki Airport and around 3.1 million passengers through other domestic airports. Ninety-four per cent of all passengers were on scheduled flights and six per cent on chartered flights.

Altogether 81 per cent of air traffic passengers, or around 15 million, travelled on international flights in 2023. Nineteen per cent, or around 3.5 million passengers, travelled on domestic flights. The share of passengers on international flights was 88 per cent at Helsinki Airport and 41 per cent in total at other domestic airports. Compared to 2022, the number of passengers on domestic flights increased by six per cent and on international flights by 22 per cent.

In 2023, the number of air traffic passengers increased by 19 per cent from 2022. The number of passengers at Helsinki Airport was 19 per cent higher and the combined number of passengers at other domestic airports 17 per cent higher than in 2022. Compared to 2019, the number of passengers at Helsinki Airport was 30 per cent lower and at other domestic airports combined 28 per cent lower in 2023. The year 2019 is used in the statistics as the comparison year to describe the number of air passengers before the pandemic.

The volume of freight and mail transport by air grew by two per cent compared to 2022. Air freight and mail transport totalled 175,620 tonnes in 2023. In all, 98 per cent of air freight was transported through Helsinki Airport and 99 per cent in traffic between Finland and foreign countries. Altogether 96,093 tonnes (55 %) of the transported volume of goods were outgoing and 79,526 tonnes (45 %) were incoming.
