Statistical Yearbook of Finland 145 years – serialised story beyond compare

The Statistical Yearbook of Finland 2024 provides an extensive overview of the statistics on Finland and Finnish society. The Yearbook contains long time series that give an overall picture of the development of our society right up to today. The Yearbook recounts numerous stories about us, our society and our environment – also for future generations. The first Statistical Yearbook of Finland was published in 1879, thus reaching the age of 145. 

The Yearbook contains the latest statistical time series, regional statistics and comparison data from other countries. In addition, the Yearbook includes statistics from other producers of official statistics. The Yearbook is trilingual (Finnish, Swedish, English) and it has altogether 449 tables, statistical graphs or thematic maps.

Here are some extracts from the data included in the Yearbook:

  • At the end of 2023, Finland's population was 5,603,851, of whom 14.9 per cent were aged under 15 and 23.4 per cent were aged 65 or over. 
  • In 1870, the population was 1.8 million. At that time, 34 per cent were aged under 15 and four per cent were aged 65 or over.
  • In 2023, the life expectancy of newborn girls was 84.2 years and that of boys 79.0 years.
  • Between 1871 and 1880, the average life expectancy was 42.9 years for girls, 40.3 years for boys.
  • Altogether 1.8 per thousand children died before their first birthday in 2023. In 1900, the figure was 153 per thousand children.
  • In 2023, a total of 30,765 persons completed the matriculation examination, of whom 41.9 per cent were men and 58.1 per cent women.
  • In all, 588 men and 341 women completed the matriculation examination in 1910.
  • At the end of 2023, there were 4.5 million cars registered in Finland.
  • The number of registered cars was 1,754 in 1922 and as many as 828,000 in 1970.
  • According to preliminary data, 183 persons were killed and 3,626 injured in road traffic accidents in 2023.
  • A total of 1,055 persons were killed and 16,028 were injured in road traffic accidents in 1970.
  • According to preliminary data, the share of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels in households' consumption expenditure was 29.7 per cent in 2023, while it was 18.6 per cent in 1980.
  • According to preliminary data, food and non-alcoholic beverages accounted for 12.5 per cent of households' consumption expenditure in 2023. In 1980, the share was 21.3 per cent.
  • In 2023, the number of cinema visits was 7.2 million, 1.3 times per inhabitant.
  • In 1950, cinema visits totalled 25.7 million, 6.4 times per inhabitant.
