Register-based research is advanced with a new project
NewsThe FIRE project funded by the Research Council of Finland to improve the conditions for register-based research will be launched at the end of February. The project is led by the University of Turku and it includes Aalto University, the University of Helsinki, the University of Tampere, the University of Jyväskylä, the University of Eastern Finland, Statistics Finland and VATT Institute for Economic Research.
“The project to be launched soon is an important step in improving access to data for research. It is excellent that we will be able to serve researchers better in future with the help of Finnish register data,” says Deputy Director General Ville Vertanen from Statistics Finland.
The project improves the knowledge base of register-based research and develops the remote access, application and education infrastructure in Finland. The project is built on Statistics Finland's Fiona remote access system, which provides an efficient calculation environment and ready-made data for conducting research.
The project supports the construction of research data and register-based research projects, and trains future register data experts in decision-making based on research and evidence.
The work of the project is organised in five working groups on the following topics:
- New ready-made research data
- Instructions for applying for a user licence and ethical assessments
- Reinforcement of competence in register-based research
- Effectiveness of register-based research
- Development of the remote access system and related support systems.
The Research Council of Finland has confirmed the funding for the project. Statistics Finland's share of the funding is EUR 840 000 over a period of four years.
The acronym for the FIRE project comes from the project's title in English: Finnish Infrastructure for Register-Based Research.
