release | Annual national accounts 31.12.2021

According to Statistics Finland’s revised preliminary data, the volume of Finland’s GDP rose by 3.0 per cent in 2021. In the preliminary data for December, the figures have become revised mainly as concerns the data on general government finances. A more extensive update to the 2021 data will be made on 28 February 2023, when the final enterprise data will be included.

Key selections

  • Gross domestic product rose by 3.0 per cent in 2021.
  • In 2020, gross domestic product fell by 2.4 per cent. The data released for 2020 are now final as the supply and use tables have been completed.
  • The financial position of local government was in deficit in 2021.
  • The data for 2021 will be released in February with detailed industry classification accuracy, when we obtain revised annual data from enterprises as sources.

The data for 2020 are now final

In 2020, gross domestic product fell by 2.4 per cent (-2.2 per cent in the previous release). The data released for 2020 are now final as the supply and use tables have been completed. Input-output data for 2020 were also published on 16 December 2022.

Financial position of local government was in deficit in 2021

The financial position of local government (municipalities and joint municipal authorities, etc.) showed a deficit of EUR 903 million in 2021. In 2020, net lending was almost in balance, EUR -106 million. The figures for 2020 were affected by temporary growth in central government transfers to local government caused by the coronavirus.

It was not possible to utilise the renewed service category-specific data on municipalities and joint municipal authorities collected by the State Treasury in the compilation of local government data for 2021 because the data were delayed and so their quality could not be assured in time. The data for 2020 were utilised in the compilation of the breakdown of local government by industry.

Data for 2021 will be released in February with detailed industry classification accuracy, when revised annual data from enterprises are obtained as sources

Revised annual national accounts data for the statistical reference year 2021 will be released on 28 February 2023. Before the February release, indicator-based data that describe output more reliably than intermediate consumption are used for one-third of enterprise data for 2021.

The data used for calculating investments will also become revised in February.

European revision policy

Starting from 2019, the preliminary annual release dates of national accounts have been scheduled for March, June, September and December in accordance with the recommendations of the harmonised European revision policy. Preliminary annual data are thus updated in every quarter, and they are coherent with the quarterly national accounts and balance of payments data, at a lag of around 80 days from the quarter. Quarterly national accounts (QNA) are first published at a lag of 60 days and benchmarked to other data at a lag of 80 days.
