According to Statistics Finland, research and development expenditure amounted to EUR 7.5 billion in 2021. Expenditure increased by EUR 559 million from 2020, which represents a growth of 8.1 per cent. The increase was based on enterprises, whose R&D expenditure went up by 11 per cent. In the government sector, the growth amounted to 3.7 per cent and in the higher education sector to 1.7 per cent. The GDP share of R&D expenditure reached 3.0 per cent, having been 2.9 per cent in the year before.
