Sea transport increased in July 2022

The goods volume of foreign sea transport was in total 8.3 million tonnes in July 2022. Sea transport increased by 2 per cent from last year's July. Exports decreased by four per cent and were 4.1 million tonnes. Import volume increased by eight per cent and were 4.2 million tonnes. Altogether 2.1 million persons were transported in passenger traffic, which was 78 per cent of the level before the corona pandemic. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finlands statistics on foreign shipping traffic.

General goods were transported most in foreign sea traffic in July

In July, the majority of sea transports were transports of general cargo. A total of 1.3 million tonnes of general cargo were transported. Imports of general cargo amounted to 0.7 million tonnes and exports to 0.6 million tonnes. The next most transported goods were oil products, 1.0 million tonnes, and coal and coke, 0.7 million tonnes.

The most import-dominated types of goods were crude oil, timber, ores and concentrates and cereals. The most export-dominated type of goods was sawn timber, paper, wood pulp, fertilizers and plywood and veneers.

Measured by volume of goods transported, the largest ports were, in order, Sköldvik, HaminaKotka, Helsinki, Raahe and Pori. Transports at Sköldvik consisted almost entirely of oil-related products and chemicals, while transports at Helsinki, Hanko and Naantali consisted mostly of general cargo. Most of the transports through Raahe, Pori, Kokkola and Tornio were manufactured in mining and metal industries, while transports from HaminaKotka and Rauma consisted mostly of forest industry products.

A total of 2.3 million tonnes, or 28 per cent of all sea transports, were transported in containers and transport units. Altogether 1.4 million tonnes of goods were transported in transport units and 1.0 million tonnes in containers.

Of the goods transported in transport units, 0.7 million tonnes were transported in lorries, 0.6 million tonnes in trailers and 0.1 million tonnes in other transport units. In addition to the transport units used for goods transport, 312,053 passengers’ cars and 3,506 buses and coaches were transported.

A total of 67,105 containers were transported, which corresponds to 120,281 TEU units.

A total of 2.1 million persons were transported in passenger traffic

A total of 2.1 million persons were transported in passenger traffic in July 2022. In all, 1,041,193 passengers travelled between Finland and Sweden, 994,626 passengers between Finland and Estonia and 25,829 passengers between Finland and Germany. Compared with July 2021, the number of passengers increased by 146 per cent. Compared with July 2019 the number of passengers was, however, just 78 per cent. In July 2022, 42 974 passengers of foreign cruise ships arrived in Finland.
