Cubic volume of granted building permits decreased by 6 per cent year-on-year in August to October 2024

According to Statistics Finland, building permits for newbuilding were granted for a total of 6.1 million cubic metres in August to October 2024, which was six per cent less than one year earlier. Over the period, building projects totalling 6.5 million cubic metres were completed, which was 39 per cent down from one year earlier.

  • The cubic volume of building permits granted for residential buildings decreased by 22 per cent from a year ago in August to October 2024. The cubic volume of other than residential building construction remained on level with the previous year.
  • Building permits were granted for a total of 3,154 dwellings, which was 31 per cent fewer than one year earlier.
  • In August to October 2024, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production went down by 11 per cent year-on-year.
  • The cubic volume of building projects started was four per cent lower in August to October than one year earlier.
  • The data on building projects started in the latest 24 months are estimated values, and they will become revised most during around 12 months from the first release.

Cubic volume of granted building permits was bigger than one year ago in seven regions

Measured by cubic volume, most building permits for newbuilding were granted in Uusimaa and Ostrobothnia in August to October 2024. The cubic volume granted in August to October exceeded that of the previous year in seven regions.

In August to October 2024, most building projects in terms of volume were completed in Uusimaa and Pirkanmaa. The cubic volume of completed building projects grew in four regions from one year ago.

On the level of the whole country, 5,926 new dwellings were completed in building projects in August to October, which was 47 per cent fewer than in the corresponding period one year earlier. Among the regions, most dwellings were completed in Uusimaa, 2,906. Compared with the previous year, the number of completed new dwellings increased only in the regions of South Ostrobothnia and Central Finland.
