General government debt grew by EUR 5.2 billion third quarter of 2024
According to Statistics Finland, general government EDP debt, i.e. consolidated gross debt at nominal prices amounted to EUR 224.8 billion in the third quarter of 2024 and grew by EUR 5.2 billion during the quarter. Relative to GDP, general government debt stood at 81.6 per cent. General government debt grew by EUR 20.4 billion compared to the respective period of the year before.

Central government debt grew by EUR 4.2 billion
During the third quarter, central government debt grew by EUR 4.2 billion and was EUR 188.9 billion at the end of the quarter. The stock of long-term bonds increased by EUR 2.8 billion and the stock of short-term debt instruments with a maturity of under one year increased by EUR 0.3 billion. The stock of short-term loans remained unchanged and the stock of long-term loans increased by EUR 1.0 billion.
Local government sector’s debt increased by EUR 0.6 billion
Local government sector's debt increased by EUR 0.6 billion during the third quarter of 2024 totalling to EUR 36.3 billion at the end of the quarter. The local government sector’s stock of long-term loans grew by EUR 0.6 billion during the quarter and was EUR 33.3 billion at the end of the third quarter.
Social security funds' debt increased by EUR 0.4 billion
Social security funds' debt grew by EUR 0.4 billion, mainly due to a increase in short-term loans and stood at EUR 1.9 billion at the end of the third quarter of 2024.
