Statistics on buildings and free-time residences renewed: data on completed buildings quarterly

Date of change:

Statistics: buildings and free-time residences

Date of change: 9 May 2023

Information about the change

Data on completed buildings start to be published quarterly in the statistics on buildings and free-time residences.

Data are published first on the number and gross floor area of buildings completed during the first quarter of 2023. The data are reported by region and the buildings are classified according to their main purpose of use. The quarterly data content will be developed in future.

At the early stages of quarterly releases, data on completed free-time residences are not yet published in the statistics.

How does the new published data differ from the statistics on building and dwelling production?

Statistics Finland also publishes separate statistics on building and dwelling production that describe the volume of newbuilding subject to building permits and the volume of building production.

The population of the statistics on building and dwelling production comprises new building projects requiring building permits, extensions and alterations comparable to reconstruction, data on their building stages and new dwelling units located in building projects.

The data for the statistics on buildings and free-time residences are drawn from the data on buildings in the Digital and Population Data Services Agency's Population Information System, where building extensions mainly concern existing buildings and they are not visible in the statistics as new buildings.

The data contents of the statistics also differ in that data on agricultural buildings are not published in the statistics on buildings and free-time residences (Classification of Buildings 2018, category 14).

Building or a building project?

The basic unit of the statistics on buildings and free-time residences is a building, while the basic units of the statistics on building and dwelling production are building projects and the related new dwellings.

In addition to newbuilding, a building project can mean extensions to an existing building or alterations comparable to reconstruction.

Due to the differences described above, the data of the statistics on buildings and free-time residences on completed buildings are not fully congruent with the building project data of the statistics on building and dwelling production.
