Innovation survey
The objective of the innovation survey is to produce data on innovation activity carried out by
enterprises, the potential of innovation activity and themes and phenomena closely linked to innovation activity.
An innovation is an enterprise's new or improved product or process (or a combination of them) that differs significantly from the enterprise's earlier products or processes and
that has been introduced on the market (product innovation) or adopted in the enterprise (process innovation).
Innovation activity refers to all development, financing and commercialisation activities of an
enterprise that aim or lead to innovations (research and development activity is included in innovation activity as a whole). Innovation activity is defined for a three-year period, but the quantitative data of the survey are collected only for the last year of the three-year period, which is the statistical reference year of the survey.
The survey comprises approximately 4,000 enterprises operating in manufacturing, incl. mining and quarrying, in the energy sector and in certain service industries. The survey
examining the generality and characteristics of innovation activity is conducted every two years.
In addition to statistics compilation, the data are used for research and for monitoring and analysing the development of innovation activity.
