Sharing economy

The data collection for the Sharing Economy Survey was carried out in 2019. The survey studies the use of services related to sharing economy in Finnish households. Sharing economy here refers to an activity where people give, sell, loan, borrow or rent things or services to each other instead of having to buy everything new or own it themselves.

The survey covers both traditional and newer services. Traditional services refer to, for example, flea markets, auctions, neighbourly help and car pooling. Newer services refer to several services organised through web platforms, such as short-term renting of a car or dwelling or borrowing money outside of traditional banks.

Besides Statistics Finland, the survey was financed by the Centre for Consumer Society Research, the Consumers’ Union of Finland, Sitra, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, the City of Helsinki and the Tax Administration.
