Statistics Finland produces statistics on vocational education annually. The preliminary statistics for the ongoing autumn that are specific for each educational institution, describe the total number of students at educational institutions offering vocational education on 20 September. The final statistics on vocational education contain data on new students, students and completers of qualifications for the calendar year. In accordance with the Statistics Act, the personal data from which these statistics are compiled are confidential. As a rule, the statistics produced from them are public.

Data content

The preliminary statistics contain data on the number of students in vocational education leading to a qualification by educational institution on 20 September. Published in the statistics on providers of education and educational institutions annually in February. The final statistics on vocational education contain data on new students, students and completers of qualifications in vocational education leading to a qualification for the calendar year. There are also data available on students in initial vocational education at the cross-sectional period on 20 September. Data are available on initial vocational qualifications, further vocational qualifications and specialist vocational qualifications. Concerning education according to the reform of vocational education, data are available on training agreement and apprenticeship training periods starting from 2019. The data prior to this have been published divided into curriculum-based initial vocational education and preparatory vocational education for a skills examination. Education completed as apprenticeship training is also separated from the qualifications. Data are also available, for example, on providers of education, educational institutions, students' qualifications at training programme level, and on regional distribution of education.

Classifications used

The data in the statistics are classified according to the classifications of Statistics Finland and the educational administration (until 2015) and international classifications of fields and levels of education, classifications describing types of educational institutions, and diverse regional and demographic classifications.

Data collection methods and data sources

The statistics on students and qualifications in vocational education are based on data reported to the Finnish National Agency for Education's Koski database by organisers/educational institutions providing vocational education and data reported to Statistics Finland by the ┼land Vocational Gymnasium (Statistics and Research ┼land ┼sub), the Arctic Vocational Foundation Utbildning Nord, the Training Institute for Prison and Probation Services and the Emergency Services Academy Finland. Prior to 2019, Statistics Finland collected the data for the statistics on students and qualifications directly from educational institutions. The data are total data.

Statistics are produced yearly.

Time of completion or release

Final individual-based student and qualification data are completed in September of the year following the statistical reference year.

Time series

Statistics Finland has collected data on vocational education since the early 1970s. The time series has been compiled since the 1980s. Changes in the statistical topic must be taken into consideration in time series examinations.
