Description

The statistics on energy accounts examine the supply and use of energy in the national economy and between the economy and the environment. In the energy accounts, the supply and use of energy are presented in accordance with the supply and use tables of the national accounts.

Examination of energy production and use by industry is one of the sub-areas of environmental accounts in the EU. The ultimate goal of environmental accounts is to describe the interaction between the environment and the economy by principally using the basic concepts and classifications of national accounts.

The European Union's regulation concerning environmental accounts (No 538/2014) obliges the Member States to compile statistics and report annually on energy accounts; for the first time in 2017 regarding the statistical reference years 2014 and 2015. The statistics form part of the United Nations' System of Environmental-Economic Accounts (SEEA).

Data content

The statistics comprise the time series of energy accounts. The supply and use of energy is broken down into 31 headings, which are:

  • Seven energy inputs originating from nature: N01 Fossil non-renewable natural energy inputs, N02 Nuclear non-renewable natural energy inputs, N03 Hydro based renewable natural energy inputs, N04 Wind based renewable natural energy inputs, N05 Solar based renewable natural energy inputs, N06 Biomass based renewable natural energy inputs, and N07 Other renewable natural energy inputs.
  • 20 energy products: P08 Hard coal, P09 Brown coal and peat, P10 Derived gases (= manufactured gases excl. biogas), P11 Secondary coal products (coke, coal tar, patent fuel, BKB and peat products), P12 Crude oil, NGL, and other hydrocarbons (excl. bio), P13 Natural gas (without bio), P14 Motor spirit (without bio), P15 Kerosenes and jet fuels (without bio), P16 Naphtha, P17 Transport diesel (without bio), P18 Heating and other gasoil (without bio), P19 Residual fuel oil, P20 Refinery gas, ethane and LPG, P21 Other petroleum products incl. additives/oxygenates and refinery feedstocks, P22 Nuclear fuel, P23 Wood, wood waste and other solid biomass, charcoal, P24 Liquid biofuels, P25 Biogas, P26 Electrical energy, and P27 Heat.
  • Four energy residuals: R28 Renewable waste, R29 Non-renewable waste, R30 Energy losses all kinds of (during extraction, distribution, storage and transformation, and dissipative heat from end use), R31 Energy incorporated in products for non-energy use.
  • The supply and use data of the headings are divided into the following categories: 64 industries of the national accounts, households, inventories, imports, exports and the environment.

Classifications used

Standard Industrial classification TOL 2008 (based on the revised NACE Rev 2. Classification), classification of natural energy inputs, energy products and energy residuals according to the EU Regulation (PEFA classification), and Classification of Sectors 2012 (based on the ESA 2010 system).

Data collection methods and data sources

The statistics are derived statistics, whose main source data are Statistics Finland's statistics on the topic of energy, national accounts supply and use tables, and air emission accounts. The statistics do not have a separate data collection.

Updating frequency

Updated once a year.

Time of completion or release

The statistics are released 21 months from the end of the statistical reference year.

Time series

The time series start from the year 2011.
