Number of enterprise openings down on the previous year – number of closures continued to rise
The number of enterprise openings fell by 10.7 per cent in the third quarter of 2009 compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, and by region relative to the enterprise stock in the Region of Uusimaa. The number of enterprise closures continued to rise in the second quarter of 2009, as it had done in the respective time periods of the four preceding years. The rise amounted to 5.4 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2008. Examined by industry the number of enterprise closures was highest in trade and by region relative to the enterprise stock in the Region of Varsinais-Suomi. Examined by legal form, there were nearly 8.6 per cent fewer openings of enterprises of the corporate form of natural person and 14 per cent fewer openings of enterprises of the corporate form of limited company than in the respective time period of the previous year.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 6,872 enterprise openings in the third quarter of 2009. Enterprise openings decreased by 10.7 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2008 when they numbered 7,695. Enterprise openings accounted for 2.2 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the third quarter of 2009.
The number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, where they numbered 1,280, or 18.6 per cent of all enterprise openings in the third quarter. In construction enterprise openings numbered 1,073 (15.6 %) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 1,051 (15.3 %).
Examined by region and relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the Region of Uusimaa, where they totalled 2,401, or 2.6 per cent of the total enterprise stock.
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the third quarter of 2009 in Helsinki (1,268), Tampere (393), Espoo (353) and Turku (252). Compared to the third quarter of 2008, enterprise openings increased most in Tampere (56) and decreased most in Vantaa (-56).

Enterprise closures, 2nd quarter of 2009
According to Statistics Finland, there were 5,640 enterprise closures in the second quarter of 2009. Compared to the second quarter of the year before, enterprise closures increased by 5.4 per cent, whereas in the second quarter of 2008 they numbered 5,349. Enterprise closures accounted for 1.8 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the April - June period of 2009.
The number of closures was highest in trade, where it totalled 1,127, representing 20 per cent of all enterprise closures. In construction enterprise closures numbered 979 (17.4 %) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 739 (13.1 %).
Examined by region, in the second quarter of 2009 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the Region of Uusimaa, where they totalled 1,802. Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the Region of Varsinais-Suomi (2.1%).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the second quarter of 2009 in Helsinki (928), Tampere (254), Espoo (235) and Turku (235). Compared to the second quarter of 2008, enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (100) and decreased most in Espoo (-30).
