Enterprise openings still growing and enterprise closures declining
According to Statistics Finland, in the third quarter of 2010, the number of enterprise openings was up by 3.9 per cent on the respective quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in construction, and by region relative to the enterprise stock in the region of Uusimaa. In the second quarter of 2010, the number of enterprise closures was down by 20.2 per cent on the corresponding quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise closures was highest in trade and by region relative to the enterprise stock in the region of Päijät-Häme.

There were 7,185 enterprise openings in the third quarter of 2010. Enterprise openings increased by 3.9 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2009, when they numbered 6,918. Enterprise openings accounted for 2.2 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the third quarter of 2010.
The number of enterprise openings was highest in construction, where they numbered 1,227, or 17.1 per cent of all enterprise openings in the third quarter. In trade enterprise openings numbered 1,225 (17.0%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 1,150 (16.0%).
Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the third quarter of 2010 in Uusimaa, where they totalled 2,552. Uusimaa also had the most enterprise openings relative to the enterprise stock (2.7%).
Examined by sub-regional unit, the number of enterprise openings in the third quarter of 2010 was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,483), followed by the sub-regional unit of Tampere (537).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the third quarter of 2010 in Helsinki (1,355), Espoo (348), Tampere (329), Turku (288) and Vantaa (280). Compared to the third quarter of 2009, enterprise openings increased most in Helsinki (126) and decreased most in Tampere (-49).
Enterprise closures, 2nd quarter of 2010
According to Statistics Finland, there were 4,406 enterprise closures in the second quarter of 2010. Compared to the second quarter of the year before, enterprise closures decreased by 20.2 per cent, as in the second quarter of 2009 they numbered 5,524. Enterprise closures accounted for 1.4 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the second quarter of 2010.
The number of enterprise closures was highest in trade, at 930 (21.1%). In construction enterprise closures numbered 649 (14.7%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 575 (13.1%).
Examined by region, in the second quarter of 2010 the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa, where they totalled 1,481. Relative to the enterprise stock, Päijät-Häme had the most enterprise closures (1.7%).
Examined by sub-regional unit, in the second quarter of 2010 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (1,451), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (349) and Turku (257).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the second quarter of 2010 in Helsinki (740), Espoo (217), Tampere (216), Vantaa (154) and Turku (153). Compared to the second quarter of 2009, enterprise closures increased most in Jämsä (13) and decreased most in Helsinki (-136).
