Enterprise openings still growing and enterprise closures declining
According to Statistics Finland, in the fourth quarter of 2010, the number of enterprise openings was up by 1.4 per cent on the respective quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, and by region relative to the enterprise stock in the region of Uusimaa. In the third quarter of 2010, the number of enterprise closures was down by 16.2 per cent on the corresponding quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise closures was highest in trade and by region relative to the enterprise stock in the region of Uusimaa.

There were 6,847 enterprise openings in the fourth quarter of 2010. Enterprise openings increased by 1.4 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2009, when they numbered 6,750. Enterprise openings accounted for 2.1 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the fourth quarter of 2010.
The number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, where they numbered 1,195, or 17.5 per cent of all enterprise openings in the fourth quarter. In professional, scientific and technical activities enterprise openings numbered 1,137 (16.6%) and in construction 1,020 (14.9%).
Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the fourth quarter of 2010 in Uusimaa, where they totalled 2,442. Uusimaa also had the most enterprise openings relative to the enterprise stock (2.5%).
Examined by sub-regional unit, the number of enterprise openings in the fourth quarter of 2010 was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,387), followed by the sub-regional unit of Tampere (500).
Examined by ELY centres, the number of enterprise openings in the fourth quarter of 2010 was highest in the ELY center of Uusimaa (2,595), followed by ELY center of Pirkanmaa (627).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the fourth quarter of 2010 in Helsinki (1,346), Espoo (353), Tampere (319), Turku (249) and Vantaa (237). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2009, enterprise openings increased most in Helsinki (72) and decreased most in Vantaa (-63).
Enterprise closures, 3rd quarter of 2010
According to Statistics Finland, there were 4,166 enterprise closures in the third quarter of 2010. Compared to the third quarter of the year before, enterprise closures decreased by 16.2 per cent, as in the third quarter of 2009 they numbered 4,973. Enterprise closures accounted for 1.3 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the third quarter of 2010.
The number of enterprise closures was highest in trade, at 825 (19.8%). In construction enterprise closures numbered 678 (16.3%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 526 (12.6%).
Examined by region, in the third quarter of 2010 the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa, where they totalled 1,436. Relative to the enterprise stock, Uusimaa had the most enterprise closures (1.5%).
Examined by sub-regional unit, in the third quarter of 2010 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (1,403), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (291) and Turku (262).
Examined by ELY centres, in the third quarter of 2010 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the ELY-center of Uusimaa (1,527), followed by ELY-center of Pirkanmaa (369).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the third quarter of 2010 in Helsinki (674), Espoo (229), Tampere (184), Turku (168) and Vantaa (167). Compared to the third quarter of 2009, enterprise closures increased most in Nurmijärvi (13) and decreased most in Helsinki (-165).
