Number of enterprise openings turned to a decline
According to Statistics Finland, in the first quarter of 2011, the number of enterprise openings was down by nearly eight per cent on the respective quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, and by region relative to the enterprise stock in the region of Uusimaa. In the fourth quarter of 2010, the number of enterprise closures was down by 19.1 per cent on the corresponding quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise closures was highest in trade and by region relative to the enterprise stock in the region of Päijät-Häme and Central Finland.

Enterprise openings, 1st quarter of 2011
There were 9,752 enterprise openings in the first quarter of 2011. Enterprise openings decreased by 7.8 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2010, when they numbered 10,579. Enterprise openings accounted for 3.0 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the first quarter of 2011.
The number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, where they numbered 1,657, or 17.0 per cent of all enterprise openings in the first quarter. In professional, scientific and technical activities enterprise openings numbered 1,623 (16.6%) and in construction 1,438 (14.7%).
Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the first quarter of 2011 in Uusimaa, where they totalled 3,339. Uusimaa also had the most enterprise openings relative to the enterprise stock (3.4%).
Examined by sub-regional unit, the number of enterprise openings in the first quarter of 2011 was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (3,253), followed by the sub-regional unit of Tampere (726).
Examined by ELY centres, the number of enterprise openings in the first quarter of 2011 was highest in the ELY center of Uusimaa (3,522), followed by ELY center of Southwest Finland (939).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the first quarter of 2011 in Helsinki (1,738), Espoo (481), Tampere (457), Vantaa (371) and Turku (364). Compared to the first quarter of 2010, enterprise openings increased most in Kuopio (22) and decreased most in Helsinki (-34).
Enterprise closures, 4th quarter of 2010
According to Statistics Finland, there were 8,449 enterprise closures in the fourth quarter of 2010. Compared to the fourth quarter of the year before, enterprise closures decreased by 19.1 per cent, as in the fourth quarter of 2009 they numbered 10,448. Enterprise closures accounted for 2.6 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the fourth quarter of 2010.
The number of enterprise closures was highest in trade, at 1,636 (19.4%). In construction enterprise closures numbered 1,322 (15.6%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 1,265 (15.0%).
Examined by region, in the fourth quarter of 2010 the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa, where they totalled 2,771. Relative to the enterprise stock, Päijät-Häme and Central Finland had the most enterprise closures (2.9%).
Examined by sub-regional unit, in the fourth quarter of 2010 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,695) and followed by the sub-regional unit of Tampere (575).
Examined by ELY centres, in the fourth quarter of 2010 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the ELY-center of Uusimaa (2,946), followed by ELY-center of Pirkanmaa (766).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the fourth quarter of 2010 in Helsinki (1,417), Espoo (385), Tampere (350), Vantaa (305) and Turku (281). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2009, enterprise closures increased most in Ikaalinen (17) and decreased most in Helsinki (-595).
