Number of enterprise openings in strong decline

According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings decreased by nearly 29 per cent in the first quarter of 2012 from the respective quarter of the year before. In the fourth quarter of 2011, the number of enterprise closures was down by 13 per cent on the corresponding quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, enterprise openings were most numerous in professional, scientific and technical activities while the number of enterprise closures was highest in trade. By region, enterprise openings and closures were most numerous in Uusimaa. According to preliminary data on the whole year, the number of enterprise openings decreased by some three per cent and the number of enterprise closures increased by around eight per cent in 2011.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 7,259 enterprise openings in the first quarter of 2012. Enterprise openings decreased by nearly 29 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2011, when they numbered 10,190. Enterprise openings accounted for 2.2 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the first quarter of 2012.

The number of enterprise openings was highest in professional, scientific and technical activities at 1,239, or 17.1 per cent of all enterprise openings in the first quarter. In trade, enterprise openings numbered 1,187 (16.4%) and in construction 947 (13.0%). In these three industries, the number of enterprise openings also decreased by most from the first quarter of 2011.

Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the first quarter of 2012 in Uusimaa, where it was 2,598. The numbers of enterprise openings were next highest in Pirkanmaa (706) and Varsinais-Suomi (613). Relative to the enterprise stock the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa (2.4%). Compared to the first quarter of 2011, the number of enterprise openings decreased in all regions, by most in Uusimaa (-1,022) and by least in Åland (-9).

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the first quarter of 2012 the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,435), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (560) and Turku (398).

Examined by ELY Centre, in the first quarter of 2012 the number of enterprise openings was highest in the ELY Centre of Uusimaa (2,598), followed by the ELY Centres of Pirkanmaa (706) and Southwest Finland (613).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the first quarter of 2012 in Helsinki (1,265), followed by Espoo (381), Tampere (370), Turku (252) and Vantaa (249). Compared to the first quarter of 2011, enterprise openings increased by most in Akaa (11) and Siikalatva (11) and decreased by most in Helsinki (-420), Turku (-160), Vantaa (-159) and Espoo (-139).

Examined by legal form, in the first quarter of 2012 enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 4,097 and those of the form of limited company 2,582. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 56.4 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 35.6 per cent of all enterprise openings.

Enterprise closures, 4th quarter of 2011

According to Statistics Finland, there were 7,674 enterprise closures in the fourth quarter of 2011. Compared to the respective quarter of the year before, enterprise closures decreased by 13 per cent, as in the fourth quarter of 2010 they numbered 8,816. Enterprise closures accounted for 2.3 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the fourth quarter of 2011.

The number of enterprise closures was highest in trade at 1,408, or 18.3 per cent of all enterprise closures in the fourth quarter. In construction, enterprise closures numbered 1,273 (16.6%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 1,138 (14.8%). In these three industries, the number of enterprise closures also decreased by most from the fourth quarter of 2010.

Examined by region, in the fourth quarter of 2011 the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa (2,694). The numbers of enterprise closures were next highest in Pirkanmaa (695) and Varsinais-Suomi (609). Relative to the enterprise stock, Kymenlaakso had the highest number of enterprise closures (2.8%). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2010, the number of enterprise closures decreased in all regions apart from Kymenlaakso and Kainuu.

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the fourth quarter of 2011 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,506), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (521) and Turku (404).

Examined by ELY Centre, in the fourth quarter of 2011 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the ELY Centre of Uusimaa (2,694), followed by the ELY Centres of Pirkanmaa (695) and Southwest Finland (609).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the fourth quarter of 2011 in Helsinki (1,243), followed by Espoo (383), Tampere (314), Vantaa (307) and Turku (241). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2010, enterprise closures increased by most in Kotka (12) and decreased by most in Turku (-91) and Helsinki (-89).

Examined by legal form, in the fourth quarter of 2011 enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 4,333 and those of the form of limited company 2,378. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person accounted for 56.5 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 31.0 per cent of all enterprise closures.
