Number of enterprise openings in decline

According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings
decreased 9.5 per cent in the second
quarter of 2012 from the respective quarter of the year before.
Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest
in construction, and by region in Uusimaa. In the first quarter of
2012, the number of enterprise closures was
down by 13.2 per cent on the corresponding quarter of the
year before. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise
closures was highest in trade, and by region in Uusimaa.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 7,554 enterprise openings in the second quarter of 2012. Enterprise openings decreased by 9.5 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2011 when they numbered 8,347. Enter-prise openings accounted for 2.3 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the second quarter of 2012.
The number of enterprise openings was highest in construction, where they totalled 1,277, or 16.9 per cent of all enterprise openings in the second quarter. In trade, enterprise openings numbered 1,239 (16.4%) and in profes-sional, scientific and technical activities 1,115 (14.8%).
Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the second quarter of 2012 in Uusimaa, where they totalled 2,624. Relative to the size of enterprise stock, the numbers of enterprise openings were highest in South Karelia and Kainuu, 2.5 per cent in both. Compared to the second quarter of 2011, the number of enterprise openings decreased most in Uusimaa (-185).
Examined by sub-regional unit, in the second quarter of 2012 the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,444), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (548) and Turku (455).
Examined by ELY centre, in the second quarter of 2012 the number of enterprise openings was highest in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (2,624), followed by the ELY centres of Pirkanmaa (701) and Southwest Finland (699).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the second quarter of 2012 in Helsinki (1,270), Espoo (374), Tampere (311), Vantaa (282) and Turku (272). Compared to the second quarter of 2011, enterprise openings increased most in Kontiolahti (10) and decreased most in Tampere (-52).
Examined by legal form, in the second quarter of 2012 enterprise openings of the form of natural person num-bered 3,848 and those of the form of limited company 2,923. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 50.9 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 38.7 per cent of all enterprise openings.
Enterprise closures, 1st quarter of 2012
According to Statistics Finland, there were 4,658 enterprise closures in the first quarter of 2012. Compared to the first quarter of the year before, enterprise closures decreased by 13.2 per cent, as in the first quarter of 2011 they numbered 5,364. Enterprise closures accounted for 1.4 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the first quarter of 2012.
The number of enterprise closures was highest in trade at 897, or 19.3 per cent of all enterprise closures in the first quarter. In construction, enterprise closures numbered 801 (17.2%) and in professional, scientific and tech-nical activities 637 (13.7%).
Examined by region, in the first quarter of 2012 the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa (1,702). Relative to the size of enterprise stock the numbers of enterprise closures were highest, or 1.6 per cent of the stock in each, in Uusimaa, Päijät-Häme and Pohjois-Savo.
Examined by sub-regional unit, in the first quarter of 2012 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (1,591), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (305) and Turku (267).
Examined by ELY centre, in the first quarter of 2012 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (1,702), followed by the ELY centre of Pirkanmaa (414).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the first quarter of 2012 in Helsinki (754), Espoo (229), Vantaa (219),Tampere (180) and Turku (160). Compared to the first quarter of 2011, enterprise closures increased most in Pori (20) and, respectively, decreased most in Helsinki (-197).
Examined by legal form, in the first quarter of 2012 enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 2,443 and those of the form of limited company 1,632. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person ac-counted for 52.4 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 35.0 per cent of all enterprise closures.
