Number of new enterprise continued to fall
According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings
decreased by 2.9 per cent in the third quarter of 2012 from the
respective quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, the
number of enterprise openings was highest in trade and by region in
Uusimaa. In the second quarter of 2012, the number of enterprise
closures was down by 1.7 per cent on the corresponding quarter of
the year before. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise
closures was highest in trade and by region in Uusimaa.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 6,946 enterprise openings in the third quarter of 2012. Enterprise openings decreased by 2.9 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2011, when they numbered 7,155. Enterprise openings accounted for 2.1 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the third quarter of 2012.
The number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, where they numbered 1,142, or 16.4 per cent of all enterprise openings in the third quarter. In construction enterprise openings numbered 1,123 (16.2%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 1,100 (15.8%). In all the above-mentioned industries, the number of enterprise openings has decreased from the previous year's corresponding quarter.
Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the third quarter of 2012 in Uusimaa, where they totalled 2,531. Examined by enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa and North Ostrobothnia, 2.3 per cent in both. Compared to the third quarter of 2011, enterprise openings increased most in Uusimaa (+33) and decreased most in Varsinais-Suomi (-83).
Examined by sub-regional unit, the number of enterprise openings in the third quarter of 2012 was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,380), followed by the sub-regional unit of Tampere (535). Compared to the third quarter of 2011, enterprise openings increased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (+63) and decreased most in in the sub-regional unit of Turku (-70).
Examined by ELY centre (Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment), the number of enterprise openings in the third quarter of 2012 was highest in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (2,531), followed by the ELY centre of Pirkanmaa (642). Compared to the third quarter of 2011, enterprise openings increased most in the sub-regional unit of Uusimaa (+33) and decreased most in in the sub-regional unit of Varsinais-Suomi (-83).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the third quarter of 2012 in Helsinki (1,235), followed by Espoo (360), Tampere (337), Vantaa (276) and Turku (269). Compared to the third quarter of 2011, enterprise openings increased most in Helsinki (106) and decreased most in Espoo (-40).
Examined by legal form, in the third quarter of 2012 enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 3,504 and those of the form of limited company 2,768. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 50.4 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 39.9 per cent of all enterprise openings.
Enterprise closures, 2nd quarter of 2012
According to Statistics Finland, there were 4,941 enterprise closures in the second quarter of 2012. Compared to the second quarter of the year before, enterprise closures decreased by 1.7 per cent, as in the second quarter of 2011 they numbered 5,029. Enterprise closures accounted for 1.5 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the second quarter of 2012.
The number of closures was highest in trade, where they numbered 915, or 18.5 per cent of all enterprise closures in the second quarter. In construction, enterprise closures numbered 797 (16.1%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 649 (13.1%). In all the above-mentioned industries, the number of enterprise closures has decreased from the previous year's corresponding quarter.
Examined by region, in the second quarter of 2012 the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa (1,819). Uusimaa also had the most enterprise closures relative to the enterprise stock (1.7%). Compared to the second quarter of 2011, enterprise closures increased most in Uusimaa (+64) and decreased most in Päijät-Häme (-66).
Examined by sub-regional unit, in the second quarter of 2012 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (1,700), followed by the sub-regional unit of Tampere (369). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2011, enterprise closures increased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (+98) and decreased most in in the sub-regional unit of Lappeenranta (-66).
Examined by ELY centre, the number of enterprise closures in the second quarter of 2012 was highest in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (1,819), followed by the ELY centre of Pirkanmaa (445). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2011, enterprise closures increased most in the sub-regional unit of Uusimaa (+64) and decreased most in in the sub-regional unit of Häme (-67).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the second quarter of 2012 in Helsinki (857), followed by Espoo (246), Tampere (215) and Vantaa (196). Compared to the second quarter of 2011, enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (+100) and decreased most in Oulu (-47).
Examined by legal form, in the second quarter of 2012 enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 2,486 and those of the form of limited company 1,793. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person accounted for 50.3 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 36.3 per cent of all enterprise closures.
