Number of enterprise openings falling
According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings
decreased by 3.1 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2012 from the
respective quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, the
number of enterprise openings was highest in professional,
scientific and technical activities and by region in Uusimaa. In
the third quarter of 2012, the number of enterprise closures was
2.5 per cent higher than in the corresponding quarter of the year
before. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise closures was
highest in trade and by region in Uusimaa.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 6,481 enterprise openings in the fourth quarter of 2012. Enterprise openings decreased by 3.1 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2011, when they numbered 6,688. Enterprise openings accounted for 1.9 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the fourth quarter of 2012.
Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in professional, scientific and technical activities at 1,127, or 17.4 per cent of all enterprise openings in the fourth quarter. In trade, enterprise openings numbered 1,058 (16.3%) and in construction 902 (13.9%).
Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the fourth quarter of 2012 in Uusimaa, where it was 2,436. Relative to the size of the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa and North Ostrobothnia, 2.2 per cent in both. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2011, enterprise openings increased most in North Ostrobothnia (+41) and decreased most in Varsinais-Suomi (-98).
Examined by sub-regional unit, the number of enterprise openings in the fourth quarter of 2012 was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,290), followed by the sub-regional unit of Tampere (463). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2011, enterprise openings increased most in the sub-regional unit of Oulu (+41) and decreased most in in the sub-regional unit of Turku (-56).
Examined by ELY centre (Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment), the number of enterprise openings in the fourth quarter of 2012 was highest in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (2,436), followed by the ELY centre of Pirkanmaa (588). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2011, enterprise openings increased most in the area of the ELY centre of North Ostrobothnia (+41) and decreased most in in the area of the ELY centre of Varsinais-Suomi (-98).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the fourth quarter of 2012 in Helsinki (1,204), followed by Espoo (382), Tampere (280), Vantaa (241) and Oulu (234). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2011, enterprise openings increased most in Oulu (+72) and decreased most in Turku (-38).
Examined by legal form, in the fourth quarter of 2012 enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 3,070 and those of the form of limited company 2,807. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 47.4 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 43.3 per cent of all enterprise openings.
Enterprise closures, 3rd quarter 2012
According to Statistics Finland, there were 4,864 enterprise closures in the third quarter of 2012. Compared to the third quarter of the year before, enterprise closures increased by 2.5 per cent, as in the third quarter of 2011 they numbered 4,744. Enterprise closures accounted for 1.4 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the third quarter of 2012.
Examined by industry, the number of closures was highest in trade, where they numbered 942, or 19.4 per cent of all enterprise closures in the third quarter. In construction, enterprise closures numbered 809 (16.6%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 605 (12.4%).
Examined by region, in the third quarter of 2012 the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa (1,698). Relative to the size of the enterprise stock, the numbers of enterprise closures were highest, or 1.5 per cent of the stock in each, in Uusimaa, South Karelia and Etelä-Savo. Compared to the third quarter of 2011, enterprise closures increased most in Varsinais-Suomi (+44) and decreased most in Uusimaa (-57).
Examined by sub-regional unit, in the third quarter of 2012 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (1,575), followed by the sub-regional unit of Tampere (348). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2011, enterprise closures increased most in the sub-regional unit of Jyväskylä (+39) and decreased most in in the sub-regional unit of Lahti (-79).
Examined by ELY centre, the number of enterprise closures in the second quarter of 2012 was highest in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (1,698), followed by the ELY centre of Varsinais-Suomi (460). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2011, enterprise closures increased most in the ELY centres of Varsinais-Suomi and Central Finland, 44 in both, and decreased most in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (-57).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the third quarter of 2012 in Helsinki (753), followed by Espoo (242), Tampere (224) and Vantaa (176). Compared to the third quarter of 2011, enterprise closures increased most in Jyväskylä (+39) and, respectively, decreased most in Helsinki (-63).
Examined by legal form, in the third quarter of 2012 enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 2,501 and those of the form of limited company 1,707. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person accounted for 51.4 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 35.1 per cent of all enterprise closures.
