Enterprise closures were most numerous in trade in the fourth quarter of 2015
According to Statistics Finland, there were 8,545 enterprise openings in the first quarter of 2016. Examined by industry, enterprise openings were most numerous in professional, scientific and technical activities. Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa. In the fourth quarter of 2015, there were 9,019 enterprise closures. Examined by industry, enterprise closures were most numerous in trade. Examined by region, the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa.
Enterprise openings and closures are deduced from the Tax Administration’s customer database. Therefore, changes in Tax Administration’s information systems or database management practices may affect the statistics and the comparability of the time series.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 8,545 enterprise openings in the first quarter of 2016. Enterprise openings accounted for 2.3 per cent of the total stock of enterprises.
Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in professional, scientific and technical activities, where they numbered 1,430, or 16.7 per cent of all enterprise openings in the first quarter. In trade, enterprise openings numbered 1,312 (15.4%) and in construction 1,064 (12.5%).
Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the first quarter of 2016 in Uusimaa, where it was 3,282. The number of enterprise openings was next highest in Pirkanmaa (747), in Varsinais-Suomi (738), in North Ostrobothnia (471). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa (2.7%).
Examined by sub-regional unit, in the first quarter of 2016, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (3,065), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (629), Turku (480), Oulu (299), Lahti (270) and Jyväskylä (268). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Helsinki (2,7%) and Jyväskylä (2.7%) sub-regional units.
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the first quarter of 2016 in Helsinki (1,670), followed by Espoo (482), Tampere (365), Vantaa (316) and Turku (293).
Examined by legal form, in the first quarter of 2016, enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 4,132 and those of the form of limited company 3,752. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 48.4 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 43.9 per cent of all enterprise openings.
Enterprise closures, 4th quarter 2015
According to Statistics Finland, there were 9,019 enterprise closures in the fourth quarter of 2015. Enterprise closures accounted for 2.4 per cent of the total stock of enterprises.
Examined by industry, the number of closures was highest in trade, where they numbered 1,617, or 17.9 per cent of all enterprise closures in the fourth quarter of 2015. In professional, scientific and technical activities, enterprise closures numbered 1,409 (15.6%) and in construction 1,246 (13.8%).
Examined by region, in the fourth quarter of 2015, the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa (3,108). The number of enterprise closures was next highest in Pirkanmaa (893), in Varsinais-Suomi (736) and North Ostrobothnia (561). Relative to the enterprise stock, Åland had the most enterprise closures (2.9%).
Examined by sub-regional unit, in the fourth quarter of 2015, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,880), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (329), Turku (306), Oulu (327), Lahti (297) and Jyväskylä (227). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Sisä-Savo (4.3%).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the fourth quarter of 2015 in Helsinki (1,532), followed by Espoo (432), Tampere (397), Vantaa (315), Turku (271) and Oulu (256).
Examined by legal form, in the fourth quarter of 2015, enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 2,684 and those of the form of limited company 1,742. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person accounted for 58.1 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 29.8 per cent of all enterprise closures.
