Enterprise openings began to show growth
According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings was up by a half per cent in the second quarter of 2016 from the respective quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, enterprise openings were most numerous in professional, scientific and technical activities. Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa. In the first quarter of 2016, the number of enterprise closures was down by 4.5 per cent on the corresponding quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, enterprise closures were most numerous in trade. Examined by region, the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa.
Enterprise openings and closures are deduced from the Tax Administration’s customer database. Therefore, changes in Tax Administration’s information systems or database management practices may affect the statistics and the comparability of the time series.

Enterprise openings, 2nd quarter of 2016
According to Statistics Finland, there were 7,015 enterprise openings in the second quarter of 2016. Enterprise openings decreased by a half per cent from the second quarter of 2015, when they numbered 6,978. Enterprise openings accounted for 2.0 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the second quarter of 2016.
Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in professional, scientific and technical activities, where they numbered 1,146, or 16.3 per cent of all enterprise openings in the second quarter. In trade, enterprise openings numbered 1,057 (15.1%) and in construction 1,041 (14.8%).
Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the second quarter of 2016 in Uusimaa, where it was 2,609. The number of enterprise openings was next highest in Varsinais-Suomi (628) and in Pirkanmaa (594). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa (2.2%). Compared to the second quarter of 2015, the number of enterprise openings increased most in North Ostrobothnia (72) and decreased most in Pirkanmaa (-39).
Examined by sub-regional unit, in the second quarter of 2016, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,448), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (475) and Turku (432). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Oulu (2.4%) and Rovaniemi (2,4%) sub-regional unit. Compared to the third quarter of 2014, enterprise openings increased most in the sub-regional unit of Turku (54) and decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Jyväskylä (-38).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the second quarter of 2016 in Helsinki (1,292), followed by Espoo (389), Vantaa (298), Tampere (295) and Turku (257). Compared to the second quarter of 2015, enterprise openings increased most in Vantaa (57) and decreased most in Helsinki (-55).
Examined by legal form, in the second quarter of 2016, enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 3,385 and those of the form of limited company 3,009. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 48.3 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 42.9 per cent of all enterprise openings.
Enterprise closures, 1st quarter 2016
According to Statistics Finland, there were 5,438 enterprise closures in the first quarter of 2016. Compared to the first quarter of the year before, enterprise closures decreased by 4.5 per cent, as in the first quarter of 2015 they numbered 5,698. Enterprise closures accounted for 1.5 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the first quarter of 2016.
Examined by industry, the number of closures was highest in trade, where they numbered 1,028, or 18.9 per cent of all enterprise closures in the first quarter of 2016. In construction, enterprise closures numbered 832 (15.3%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 745 (13.7%).
Examined by region, in the first quarter of 2016, the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa (2,058). The number of enterprise closures was next highest in Pirkanmaa (487) and in Varsinais-Suomi (419). Relative to the enterprise stock, Uusimaa had the most enterprise closures (1.8%). Compared to the first quarter of 2015, enterprise closures increased most in Uusimaa (29) and decreased most in Varsinais-Suomi (–139).
Examined by sub-regional unit, in the first quarter of 2016, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (1,942), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (393) and Turku (279). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Forssa (2.0%). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2015, enterprise closures increased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (37) and decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Turku (-113).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the first quarter of 2016 in Helsinki (1,085), followed by Espoo (287), Tampere (236) and Vantaa (235). Compared to the first quarter of 2015, enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (83) and decreased most in Turku (-95).
Examined by legal form, in the first quarter of 2016, enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 5,438 and those of the form of limited company 2,056. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person accounted for 49.7 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 37.8 per cent of all enterprise closures.
