The number of enterprise openings was down, compared to the first quarter of the year before

According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings decreased by 4.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2017 from the respective quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, enterprise openings were most numerous in professional, scientific and technical activities. Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa. In the fourth quarter of 2016, the number of enterprise closures was down by 6.2 per cent on the corresponding quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, enterprise closures were most numerous in trade. Examined by region, the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa.

Enterprise openings, 1st quarter of 2017

According to Statistics Finland, there were 8,588 enterprise openings in the first quarter of 2017. Enterprise openings decreased by 4.3 per cent from the first quarter of 2016, when they numbered 8,971. Enterprise openings accounted for 2.4 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the fourth quarter of 2017.

Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in professional, scientific and technical activities, where they numbered 1,438, or 16.7 per cent of all enterprise openings in the first quarter. In trade, enterprise openings numbered 1,261 (14.7%) and in construction 1 023 (11.9%). Compared to the first quarter of 2016, the number of enterprise openings decreased most in trade (-132).

Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the first quarter of 2017 in Uusimaa, where it was 3,154. The number of enterprise openings was next highest in Varsinais-Suomi (813) and in Pirkanmaa (750). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa (2.7%) and North Ostrobothnia (2.5%). Compared to the first quarter of 2016, the number of enterprise openings increased most in Ostrobothnia (49) and decreased most in Uusimaa (-264).

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the first quarter of 2017, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,280), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (625) and Turku (560). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Haapavesi-Siikalatva (2,9%) sub-regional unit. Compared to the first quarter of 2016, enterprise openings increased most in the sub-regional unit of Turku (40) and decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (-223).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the first quarter of 2017 in Helsinki (1,575), followed by Espoo (481), Tampere (359), Vantaa (338) and Turku (336). Compared to the first quarter of 2016, enterprise openings increased most in Järvenpää (19) and decreased most in Helsinki (-172).

Examined by legal form, in the first quarter of 2017, enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 4,226 and those of the form of limited company 3,680. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 49.2 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 42.9 per cent of all enterprise openings.

Enterprise closures, 4th quarter 2016

According to Statistics Finland, there were 8,737 enterprise closures in the fourth quarter of 2016. Compared to the fourth quarter of the year before, enterprise closures decreased by 6.2 per cent, as in the fourth quarter of 2015 they numbered 9,317. Enterprise closures accounted for 2.4 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the fourth quarter of 2016.

Examined by industry, the number of closures was highest in trade, where they numbered 1,594, or 18.2 per cent of all enterprise closures in the fourth quarter of 2016. In professional, scientific and technical activities, enterprise closures numbered 1,341 (15.3%) and in construction 1,158 (13.3%). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2015, the number of enterprise closures decreased most in construction (-121).

Examined by region, in the fourth quarter of 2016, the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa (3,030). The number of enterprise closures was next highest in Pirkanmaa (778) and in Varsinais-Suomi (759). Relative to the enterprise stock, Uusimaa had the most enterprise closures (2.6%) and Päijät-Häme (2.6%). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2015, enterprise closures decreased most in Uusimaa (-173) and increased most in Satakunta (29).

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the fourth quarter of 2016, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,832), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (614) and Turku (496). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional units of Koillis-Savo (3.6%). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2015, enterprise closures decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (-136) and increased most in the sub-regional unit of Kouvola (24).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the fourth quarter of 2016 in Helsinki (1,454), followed by Espoo (409), Tampere (340) and Vantaa (315) and Turku (277). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2015, enterprise closures decreased most in Helsinki (-130) and increased most in Lahti (24).

Examined by legal form, in the fourth quarter of 2016, enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 5,372 and those of the form of limited company 2,322. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person accounted for 61.5 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 26.6 per cent of all enterprise closures.

Enterprise openings and closures are deduced from the Tax Administration’s customer database. Therefore, changes in Tax Administration’s information systems or database management practices may affect the statistics and the comparability of the time series.
