The number of enterprise openings increased by 5.5 per cent when compared with 2016

According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings in 2017 were most numerous in professional, scientific and technical activities. Regionally enterprise openings were most numerous in Uusimaa. The number of enterprise openings increased by 5.5 per cent from 2016.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 30,169 enterprise openings in 2017. Enterprise openings accounted for 7.9 per cent of the total stock of enterprises. The number of enterprise openings was highest in professional, scientific and technical activities, where it totalled 5,041, or 16.7 per cent of all enterprise openings in 2017.

Examined by region, the highest numbers of enterprise openings (11,279) was recorded in Uusimaa in 2017. Compared to 2016, the number of enterprise openings increased most in Uusimaa (316) and decreased most in Kainuu (-45).

Examined by sub-regional unit, the highest numbers of enterprise openings in 2017 was recorded in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (10,671). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Oulu (9.8%).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings (5,636) was recorded in Helsinki in 2017. Compared to 2016, the number of enterprise openings increased most in Espoo (184) and decreased most in Porvoo (-47).

Examined by legal form, during 2017 enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 15,026 and those of the form of limited company 12,782.

These numbers include changes in enterprises resulting from incorporations and mergers, for example.

Enterprise openings and closures are deduced from the Tax Administration’s customer database. Therefore, changes in Tax Administration’s information systems or database management practices may affect the statistics and the comparability of the time series.
