Number of enterprise openings grew briskly and that of enterprise closures decreased

According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings rose by nearly one fourth in the third quarter of 2019 from the respective quarter of 2018. The number of enterprise closures fell by six per cent in the second quarter of 2019 from one year earlier.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 9,879 enterprise openings in July to September 2019. There were 1,815 or 23 per cent more enterprise openings than in the corresponding period in 2018.

Examined by main industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in professional, scientific and technical activities. In that industry, the number of enterprise openings was 1,710. This is 17 per cent of all enterprise openings in the third quarter of 2019. There were the second most enterprise openings in the industry of construction (1,277) and the third most in trade (1,020). Compared to the third quarter of 2018, the number of enterprise openings also rose in the industry of professional, scientific and technical activities (+435).

Examined by region, most enterprise openings were recorded in Uusimaa, 4,083 enterprises. The number of enterprise openings was next highest in Pirkanmaa (917), Southwest Finland (864) and North Ostrobothnia (591). There were nearly 900 more enterprise openings in Uusimaa than in the third quarter of 2018. The number of enterprise openings in Pirkanmaa was around 190, in Southwest Finland 160 and in North Ostrobothnia 120 more than in the corresponding period. The number of enterprise openings remained unchanged in Central Ostrobothnia and fell by around one quarter in Kainuu.

Examined by sub-regional unit, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki, 3,880 enterprises. There were 757 enterprise openings in the sub-regional unit of Tampere and 639 in the sub-regional unit of Turku. In the sub-regional unit of Helsinki, the number of enterprise openings grew by around 840 from one year back and in the sub-regional unit of Tampere by 150, similarly as in Turku.

Examined by municipality, most enterprise openings were recorded in Helsinki, 1,955 in the third quarter of 2019. The number of enterprise openings was second highest in Espoo (664), Vantaa (537), Tampere (481), Turku (397) and Oulu (352).

Examined by legal form, enterprise openings in the form of natural persons numbered 4,783 and those in the form of limited companies 4,692 in the third quarter of 2019. Enterprise openings in the form of natural persons accounted for 48 per cent and those in the form of limited companies for 47 per cent of all enterprise openings.

Enterprise closures, 2nd quarter of 2019

According to Statistics Finland, there were 5,098 enterprise closures in April to June 2019. There were 343 or six per cent fewer enterprise closures than in the corresponding period in 2018.

Examined by main industry, the number of enterprise closures was highest in trade (863) and in professional, scientific and technical activities (858). Two-thirds of enterprise closures operated in these two industries. The number of enterprise closures was next highest in construction (622).

Examined by region, most enterprise closures were recorded in Uusimaa, 1,988 enterprises. The numbers of enterprise closures were next highest in Pirkanmaa (443) and Southwest Finland (436). The numbers of enterprise closures were in quantitative terms higher in North Karelia, South Savo and Satakunta than one year before.

Examined by sub-regional unit, the number of enterprise closures in the second quarter of 2019 was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki, 1,876. There were 375 enterprise closures in the sub-regional unit of Tampere and 289 in the sub-regional unit of Turku.

Examined by municipality, most enterprise closures were recorded in Helsinki, 1,039 in the second quarter of 2019. The number of enterprise closures was second highest in Espoo (290), Tampere (219), Vantaa (193) and Turku (176).

Examined by legal form, in the second quarter of 2019, enterprise closures in the form of natural persons numbered 2,433 and those in the form of limited companies 2,192. Enterprise closures in the form of natural persons accounted for 48 per cent and those in the form of limited companies for 43 per cent of all enterprise closures.

Enterprise openings and closures are deduced from the Tax Administration's customer database. Changes in the Tax Administration's data systems or database maintenance can have an effect on the data of the statistics and comparability of time series.
