Number of enterprise openings grew by 10 per cent in the first quarter of 2020
According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings rose by 10 per cent in the first quarter of 2020 from the respective quarter of 2019. In the fourth quarter of 2019, the number of enterprise closures was eight per cent higher than in the corresponding quarter of the year before.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 11,963 enterprise openings in January to March 2020. There were 10 per cent more enterprise openings than in the corresponding period of 2019. The number of enterprise openings grew also in March 2020 from one year back.
Examined by main industry, most enterprise openings were recorded in professional, scientific and technical activities. The number of enterprise openings in this industry was 2,051. Second most enterprise openings were recorded in the industry of construction (1,499) and third most in trade (1,318). The number of enterprise openings increased most in construction (+311) and decreased most in arts, entertainment and recreation activities (-67) compared to the first quarter of 2019.
Examined by region, most enterprise openings were recorded in Uusimaa, 4,718 enterprises. The number of enterprise openings was next highest in Pirkanmaa (1,074) and Southwest Finland (1,038). In relative terms, the number of enterprise openings increased most in Central Ostrobothnia from one year ago, there the growth percentage was almost 50. In Kymenlaakso and South Karelia, the growth was around one-fifth in both regions.
Examined by sub-regional unit, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki, 4,467 enterprises. There were 911 enterprise openings in the sub-regional unit of Tampere and 729 in the sub-regional unit of Turku. In the sub-regional unit of Helsinki, the number of enterprise openings grew by 15 per cent from one year back, as it also did in the sub-regional unit of Tampere. In the sub-regional unit of Turku, the growth was five per cent. Compared to the year before, the number of enterprise openings increased in around every second sub-regional unit.
Examined by municipality, the highest number of enterprise openings in the first quarter of 2020 was recorded in Helsinki, 2,321 enterprises. The number of enterprise openings was next highest in Espoo (762), Vantaa (569), Tampere (544) and Turku (454). In Greater Helsinki (incl. Kauniainen) the number of enterprise openings increased by 16 per cent, in Tampere by six per cent and in Turku by nine per cent compared to the corresponding period of the year before.
Examined by legal form, in the first quarter of 2020, enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 6,352 and those of the form of limited company 5,111. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 53 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 43 per cent of all enterprise openings.
Enterprise closures, 4th quarter 2019
According to Statistics Finland, there were 6,461 enterprise closures in October to December 2019. There were eight per cent more enterprise closures than in the corresponding period of 2018.
Examined by main industry, the highest number of enterprise closures was recorded in trade (1,009). The next highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in professional, scientific and technical activities (987) and construction (807). The number of enterprise closures rose clearly most in the industry of other service activities, which had 149 more enterprise closures than in the corresponding period of the year before.
Examined by region, most enterprise closures were recorded in Uusimaa, 2,347 enterprises. The next highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in Pirkanmaa (605) and Southwest Finland (559). Compared to the last quarter of 2018, the number of enterprise closures decreased only in Satakunta.
Examined by sub-regional unit, the highest number of enterprise closures in the fourth quarter of 2019 was recorded in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki, 2,213 enterprises. There were 488 enterprise closures in the sub-regional unit of Tampere and 400 in the sub-regional unit of Turku. In the sub-regional unit of Helsinki, the number of enterprise closures grew by eight per cent from one year back, in the sub-regional unit of Tampere by four per cent and in the sub-regional unit of Turku by 15 per cent. The number of enterprise closures decreased in around every third sub-regional unit.
Examined by municipality, the highest number of enterprise closures in the fourth quarter of 2019 was recorded in Helsinki, 1,104 enterprises. The number of enterprise closures was next highest in Espoo (348), Vantaa (285), Tampere (276) and Turku (238). In Helsinki, Espoo and Tampere, the number of enterprise closures was on the same level as one year previously. By contrast, the number of enterprise closures increased by 30 per cent in Vantaa and by 16 per cent in Turku.
Examined by legal form, in the last quarter of 2019, enterprise closures in the form of natural persons numbered 3,744 and those in the form of limited companies 2,165. Enterprise closures in the form of natural persons accounted for 58 per cent and those in the form of limited companies for 34 per cent of all enterprise closures.
Enterprise closures by region, 4th quarter of 2019
Enterprise openings and closures are deduced from the Tax Administration's customer database. Changes in the Tax Administration's data systems or database maintenance can have an effect on the data of the statistics and comparability of time series.
