Number of enterprise closures grew by one decimal at the end of 2020

According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings grew by one per cent in October to December 2020 compared with the respective quarter in 2019. In July to September 2020, the number of enterprise closures was 10 per cent higher than twelve months earlier.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 9,228 enterprise openings in October to December 2020. There were one per cent more enterprise openings than in the corresponding period of 2019. In absolute numbers, enterprise openings increased by around one hundred.

Examined by main industry, most enterprise openings were recorded in professional, scientific and technical activities. The number of enterprise openings in this industry was 1,654. The number of enterprise openings was next highest in trade (1,181) and construction (1,061). Compared to the last quarter of 2019, enterprise openings fell most in transportation and storage, by 29 per cent.

Examined by region, most enterprise openings were recorded in Uusimaa, 3,777 enterprises. The number of enterprise openings was next highest in Pirkanmaa (859) and Southwest Finland (782). The number of enterprise openings increased most from one year back in Central Finland (29%) and decreased most in Kanta-Häme (16%).

Examined by sub-regional unit, the number of enterprise openings grew slightly or remained unchanged in over one-half (64%) of the sub-regional units compared with one year earlier. The number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki, 3,563 enterprises. There were 730 enterprise openings in the sub-regional unit of Tampere and 577 in the sub-regional unit of Turku. Of big sub-regional units, enterprise openings increased most in Jyväskylä, Kuopio and Tampere and decreased in Helsinki and Oulu.

Examined by legal form, in the fourth quarter of 2020, enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 4,484 and those of the form of limited company 4,377. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 49 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 47 per cent of all enterprise openings.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 4,382 enterprise closures in July to September 2020. There were 10 per cent more enterprise closures than in the corresponding period in 2019, that is, around 400 more closures in absolute numbers.

Examined by main industry, the highest number of enterprise closures was recorded in trade (706) and in construction (645). The number of enterprise closures grew most in the field of health and social services (50%) and construction (27%). The number of enterprise closures decreased only in real estate activities and in arts, entertainment and recreation.

Examined by region, most enterprise closures were recorded in Uusimaa, 1,686 enterprises. The number of enterprise closures was next highest in Pirkanmaa and Southwest Finland. Compared to the previous year, enterprise closures increased most in relative terms in Åland and South Ostrobothnia.

Examined by sub-regional unit, the highest number of enterprise closures in the third quarter of 2020 was recorded in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki, 1,598 enterprises. There were 308 enterprise closures in the sub-regional unit of Tampere and 251 in the sub-regional unit of Turku. The number of enterprise closures increased by 16 per cent in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki and fell by 22 per cent in the sub-regional unit of Jyväskylä from one year back.

Examined by legal form, in the third quarter of 2020, enterprise closures in the form of natural persons numbered 2,091 and those in the form of limited companies 1,780. Enterprise closures in the form of natural persons accounted for 48 per cent and those in the form of limited companies for 41 per cent of all enterprise closures.

Enterprise openings and closures are deduced from the Tax Administration's customer database. Changes in the Tax Administration's data systems or database maintenance can have an effect on the data of the statistics and comparability of time series.
