Number of passengers at Finnish airports still far from the 2019 level in May 2021

According to Statistics Finland, a total of 154,939 passengers flew through Finnish airports in May 2021, which was many times more than last year, but still 93 per cent fewer than in May 2019. The exceptionally large relative growth in the number of passengers compared to the year before was caused by the collapse of air traffic due to the COVID-19 pandemic one year ago. There were 125,042 passengers at Helsinki Airport and a total of 29,897 passengers at other domestic airports. Helsinki Airport accounted for 81 per cent of all passengers at domestic airports.

In May 2021, the number of passengers at Helsinki Airport was 94 per cent lower and the combined number of passengers at other domestic airports was 91 per cent lower than in May 2019.

Of the passengers 66 per cent came from international flights and 34 per cent from domestic flights. The share of passengers on international flights was 79 per cent at Helsinki Airport and 10 per cent in total at other domestic airports.

In May 2021, air freight and mail transport totalled 12,999 tonnes, which was 24 per cent more than one year earlier. In total, 97 per cent of the tonnes passed through Helsinki Airport and 99 per cent were transported in traffic between Finland and foreign countries. Altogether 6,650 tonnes of the transported volume of goods were outgoing and 6,349 tonnes were incoming.
