General government debt decreased in 2005

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary datageneral government EMU debt decreased by EUR 3.4 billion from the year before. The GDP share of the EMU debt contracted to 41.1 per cent, which besides decrease in debt, was due to growth of GDP. Local government continued to incur debts, while central government debt turned clearly downwards. The EMU debt describes general government debt to other sectors of the economy and to the rest of the world, and it is influenced by changes in both gross debt and internal debts of the general government. In 2005 the total general government debt decreased by EUR 3.3 billion and internal debts remained on level with the previous year.

General government EMU surplus was 2.6 per cent of GDP in 2005. Central government accumulated a surplus of EUR 1.3 billion. In contrast, the local government sector was still EUR 1.2 billion in deficit. Employment pension schemes collected a surplus of EUR 4 billion, while other social security funds remained EUR 0.1 billion in deficit.

Revised national accounts time series for the years 1975-2004 will be published on 31 March 2006. Then the time series of general government EMU deficit and debt will also be updated, which for the time being are given as they were reported in August 2005. Data for the year 2005 congruent with the revised time series will be released on 13 July 2006.
